Ward Update, August 30

Posted on August 30, 2020September 6, 2020 by Brother Valentine

Sisters and Brothers –

My life has been blessed when I take the time to ponder on the scriptures and consider what the Lord may be saying to me through the words of the prophets — ancient and modern.

This week’s “Come, Follow Me” reading included thoughts on how Nephi received comfort and counsel from taking time to turn his thoughts and his heart to the Lord.

“And it came to pass that Nephi went his way towards his own house, pondering upon the things which the Lord had shown unto him.

“And it came to pass as he was thus pondering—being much cast down because of the wickedness of the people of the Nephites, their secret works of darkness, and their murderings, and their plunderings, and all manner of iniquities—and it came to pass as he was thus pondering in his heart, behold, a voice came unto him saying:

“Blessed art thou, Nephi, for those things which thou hast done; for I have beheld how thou hast with unwearyingness declared the word, which I have given unto thee, unto this people. And thou hast not feared them, and hast not sought thine own life, but hast sought my will, and to keep my commandments.”

Helaman 10:2-4

My mission president once shared his thoughts on carving out time in our lives to quietly contemplate what the Lord would have us do. He said: “Elder Bennett, in my experience, the Spirit most often works in silence.”

I’ve found that to be true in my life, too. As I work to create quiet moments of reflection — often in the early or late hours of the day — I have experiences that bring clarity to my heart and mind. When anxiety grips me, I work to find a quiet place or go on a walk where I can be by myself. In my efforts, I am often blessed with a clearer mind and surer breath.

Please find times in your lives that are free from the noise, clutter and distraction of the world. Find times where you can ponder the important and evaluate the valuable. Pray for the Lord’s direction in those times. As I have done that, I have felt the Lord’s hand in my life.

The Sabbath day brings an excellent opportunity for this quiet reflection. At least once a week, we are asked to reflect on our baptismal covenants and what they mean to us. I look forward to seeing families whose last names begin with letters H through P in the chapel with us today at noon. For others, I am authorizing the administration of the sacrament at home by worthy priesthood holders of the appropriate office. Please contact me or a member of the elders quorum presidency with any questions or clarification or assistance.

I love you all and hope you have a great week that is blessed with the peace that comes from prayer and pondering.

Bishop Bennett
