October 2020 YW Newsletter

Posted on October 4, 2020November 1, 2020 by Brother Valentine

My oldest sister was a teacher, and her favorite thing to tell her class was, “I Can Do Hard Things.” My family has gone through a lot in the last couple months after she passed away, but I’ve kept that saying in my head: “I Can Do Hard Things.”  Losing someone is hard, but I can get through it.  We do hard things every day.  Sometimes it takes a personal pep talk and a big deep breath, but you do it.  One thing I’ve learned, though, is that we are never doing it alone.

We have been challenged to do 150 things these past few months in honor of the 150 years of the Young Women Organization.  Challenge yourself; do something hard.  I, myself, have never read the Book of Mormon all the way through, but I have had a huge desire to feel of the Spirit and learn more about the Plan of Salvation.  My challenge was to read the Book of Mormon.  There are some days I don’t get to it, and most of the time I might not understand it, but I have felt the encouragement of the Lord. I am doing my hard thing.  And amazing results have come from it.  I feel His love as I think of all I have accomplished so far.  I will finish the Book of Mormon (And it is amazing!) this week, just in time for General Conference.

If we seek his help and open our hearts to Him, the Lord will strengthen us in our hard things.  President Russel M. Nelson gave a wonderful devotional at BYU-Idaho in 2015 about this very thing.

“…So, to you I say, foster your faith. Fix your focus with an eye single to the glory of God. “Be strong and courageous” (2 Chronicles 32:7), and you will be given power and protection from on high. The Lord has declared His sustaining help: “For I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up” (D&C 84:88).

The Lord has more in mind for you than you have in mind for yourself! You have been reserved and preserved for this time and place. You can do hard things. At the same time, as you love Him and keep His commandments, great rewards—even unimaginable achievements—may be yours. Indeed, “eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

You can accomplish the impossible.”

Dear sweet girls!  We love you and we pray for you!  This time in your life is a hard trial.  Satan is attacking you at every angle.  He is attacking your leaders, and your parents, your friends, and family members.  But as President Nelson has said, “Fix your focus… Be strong and courageous… You can do hard things… great rewards – even unimaginable achievements – may be yours. You can accomplish the impossible.”  Do your hard thing.  Know that you have the Lord by your side and angels all around you cheering you on.  We are cheering you on.

All our love,

Sister Cuthill

Ellie Wahlquist

Ellie comes from a big family with four brothers and three sisters. She is the third child. She turns 12 really soon on October 11. She actually came three weeks early. She was anxious to be here with the colors of fall. She’s always been spunky, fun, extremely sweet and giving. She was born with an incredible ability to dance and hear music through her body. She also loves soccer and basketball. She is very photogenic and has a great stage presence.  When she was young she liked to push my buttons and say things like “I can’t know how to obey…” but if I threatened to wash her mouth out with soap or something she would go wash her own mouth out with soap because she thought she was being obedient. When she was three she tried to ride down the front concrete steps on her tricycle and it flipped over. She really could have broken her neck but I feel like angels guided her to fall safely. She is a blessing to our family and to all those who know her. She loves to make friends and is good at helping others to feel loved and important. When she grows up she wants to continue to help people by being a doctor or nurse or maybe a dance teacher. She has the talent to achieve her dreams. We sure love Ellie!

We do too! Thank you, Sister Wahlquist!

Emma Herre

Emma Herre, 15. Emma is the middle child. She has an older sister, Lauren(19) who goes to the University of Utah, and a younger sister, Sarah(10). Emma is a sophomore at American Leadership Academy. She enjoys all her classes but loves Show Choir and English the most. She is sacrificing show choir this year to have the opportunity to check a major bucket item on her list-to travel in France and Germany, hopefully in June 2021. Emma has an awesome sense of humor and is constantly making us laugh. She also has the sweetest heart. She is always thinking of others and doing something to help people out. Her hobbies are playing the piano and the upright bass, singing, cleaning(yes really!! I’m very lucky) and swimming. Last year Emma was able to compete at State for swimming. She’s got big goals this year for swimming and we’re so excited to cheer her on.

Thank you, Sister Herre! We hope Emma can make it on her trip next year!
